Bored? ~ Let Us Help You Discover Your Fascinating Family History

If you are sitting at home right now trying to figure out how to spend your time, the Linton Public Library is here to help!

Discover your fascinating family history!

Over the next few weeks, I will be giving you a few steps at a time to get you started on discovering your family history. The only ingredient you need to bring to the mix is just your curiosity!

Look Around Your Home

Do you have photos and mementos
at home?

Do you have photo albums filled with old photos? Where did that old quilt come from? These are the types of items that will begin your search. Start by gathering the photos, documents and mementos in one place. Write down all the stories and memories you can remember.

As you begin to take a closer look at what you already have, you will begin to have questions. Write these questions down on paper, or on a computer. These questions will now lead us to the next step.

Talk to Family Members

Talk to family members

Talking to family members will hopefully start getting you answers to some of your questions. Make sure your questions are open-ended, so as to elicit a more detailed response. Interviewing is easier in this technology-driven age than ever before. Emails and video calling apps (such as FaceTime) can help during this time of social distancing.

Once you have started Aunt Betty on telling you all about her seven siblings, you need to ensure that you are capturing everything for future reference. If Aunt Betty is fine with it, a recording app on your smartphone would work well. However, good old-fashioned notes are always a reliable standby. Also, asking questions in an email might possibly be a viable option.

And, Next Time...

To capture the details you are gathering into some sort of order, our next post will focus on a few websites and downloadable forms to help you organize all your new fascinating family history facts and stories.
