Alive and Well! A Snapshot of Library Life

Don't Believe Everything You Hear

In the news and social media, it seems like you are constantly being told that libraries are slowly become obsolete and extinct.  I am here to tell everyone that all these "so-called" experts are wrong!

Or, at the very least, the idea that public libraries are a dying breed has not reached the small town of Linton, Indiana. Located in the central southwest area of Indiana, we are a small rural town of approximately 5,000 people, perfectly poised between three college cities.

With a population that runs the gamut in regards to age and socioeconomic status, our library has to offer a little bit of everything for our patrons. On a cold winter day, it is a haven from the cold. It is a comfortable place to sit and rest, while not feeling pressured to spend money.

Take a look for yourself at a Snapshot of Library Life in our little small-town library!

Books, Movies, Programs & So Much More

On any given day, people of all ages are in and out the door all day long to check out books at our library. And, to also check out old movies, new movies, music CD's, and audiobooks, such as this mother/daughter duo.

Just this morning, there was roughly a good solid hour in which the two staff members working were 1) helping teach a woman how to download/print photos from her email, 2) sending a fax, 3) checking in books and DVD's being returned, 4) checking out books and DVD's, 5) answering several phone calls and 6) putting items on hold for two different patrons.

Computer Access for All

Our six computers consistently are used at full to half-full capacity throughout the day. Access to public computers are so very important for everyone in the community. Patrons are applying for jobs, printing out taxes, checking emails and so much more!

Our computer station stays busy!

Genealogy

Our Indiana/Genealogy area has become quite a popular area. You can see below how our Ancestry.com databases are being used. Our two genealogy volunteers also stay quite busy helping patrons in person, through email and more. Genealogy classes are frequent and well-attended throughout the year.

As you can see, we stay quite busy at the Linton Public Library! Our community knows what a valuable resource we are for all ages. For over twenty years, it has been predicted that libraries are obsolete and irrelevant. On a daily basis, our patrons prove all the "experts" wrong...and we are eternally grateful for that fact!
