What Is Your Favorite Librarian Reading These Days?

As librarians at a small public library, not a day goes by that we are not asked what books we are reading or would recommend. To start the new year off right, we would like to share our most recent "Best Finds" with all of you!

Jennifer ~ The Astronaut Wives Club by the  Lily Koppe

I'm a working mom with two young kids, so I don't have as much time to read as I used to.  The last book that I read for myself and really enjoyed, was the The Astronauts Wives Club.  This book reveals how the missions of the Mercury Seven astronauts impacted the lives of their wives.  Along with the worry and fear for their husbands' safety, the women became overnight celebrities of sorts and their lives were completely turned upside down.  It's an interesting topic, and one that I never gave much thought about until reading the book.

Connie ~ Flights of Fancy by Jen Turano (American Heiresses, Book 1)

Delightful romance with creative character development and insights into working conditions in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was a wonder quick read, and I honestly can't wait to get started on the 2nd book, Diamond in the Rough!

Donita ~ My favorite book is really the whole Sun Coast Chronicles by Terri Blackstock.

There are four books in this series.
1. Evidence of Mercy
2. Justifiable Means
3 Ulterior Motives
4. Presumption of Guilt

Each time I finished one, I could hardly wait to get my hands on the next one.

Award-winning novelist Terri Blackstock writes with absorbing legal drama and lightning-paced action, tempered with remarkable realism and penetrating insights into the human heart.

Diane ~ A Song for the Stars by Ilima Todd

The following review says so much more about this book than I ever could. However, I can tell you that I stayed up late at night to finish this wonderful story!  It captured my imagination and swept me back in time to the beautiful islands of Hawaii. Wonderfully told historical fiction that I would most definitely recommend!

"A fictionalized version of the romance between a Hawaiian princess and an English naval officer
from Cook's last fateful voyage, one of the first hapa haole (half-white, half-Hawaiian) marriages
on record. Todd's first adult novel is based on her fourth great-grandparents.The story is captivating."

Charlotte

These were all excellent books! I had a hard time choosing a favorite, so I included all of these great stories.

This Tender Land by William Kent Kruegar

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

We Were The Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter

Mary ~ Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson

This book is a quick, easy read. It has a few twists that make it fun. It doesn't have the most exciting ending, but it is my favorite read of the year.

Ginger ~ Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton

Here is a shortened version of the plot, from Wikipedia: "From the back country of South Africa, black minister Stephen Kumalo journeys to Johannesburg to help his sister, who has been reported to be ill, and to search for his son, who left home and has not kept in contact. He finds out that his son has got a young girl pregnant and is a thief and a murderer. The minister confronts the harsh reality of apartheid and its inimical effects on both white and black inhabitants." The book is absolutely beautiful and the main character comes alive to the reader as a role model of Christ-like character.

Jennifer ~ Guardians Trilogy (a series) by Nora Roberts

 1)  Stars of Fortune 2)  Bay of Sighs 3)  Island of Glass

This series is about 6 individuals who come together to search for 3 stars (Fire star, Ice star and Water star) created by 3 sisters who are Goddesses. They created the stars as a present for their new queen. There is also a 4th sister who is dark and wants to control the worlds and wants control of the stars.  The evil goddess put a spell of the stars so that they would eventually fall. To protect the stars, the stars had another spell put on them so that when they fall, they would fall away from each other and be hidden until the six guardians can find them and return them where they belong. If they fail the dark sister will use the power to control the worlds.  In this series the six guardians each have a power of their own and come together to try and defeat the dark goddess . Each book also has a love story intertwined as well as comedy, suspense, action and sadness.

  1. I have a sort of strange sting of books I'm reading. I am actually rereading "Too funny to be President" by Mo Udall. Also the 'Harley Merlin" Series by Bella Forrest. The Baxter Family Series by Karen Kingsbury. Last but not least "Failure is not an option" by Gene Kranz

    1. That sounds like a very eclectic collection of books! I will have to check into whether the library has all of them, so that I can look into them myself. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I appreciate this blogpost, it's always interesting to know what others are reading. My best recent read was Fierce Bad Rabbits by Clare Pollard. It tells the stories behind some of the best-loved picture books - often surprising and fascinating. By the way, greetings librarians of Linton! I also work in Linton Library...in Cambridgeshire, UK. May 2020 be a great year for libraries everywhere, but especially in Linton!

    1. Thank you, Anna! I have not heard of Fierce Bad Rabbits. I have always loved "behind-the-scenes" types of movies, books, etc. And, if it's about books, that is even better! It is wonderful to hear from our "twin" from across the pond! Hope to keep in touch with you.
